Web Design Day Two

Students completed the following projects
1. Website Poll
2. Website Video

1. Polls
  • Discussed ways to generate traffic to website
  • Looked at polling techniques
  • Created polls for website related to the topic of the website
  • Students voted on class polls

2. Website  Video
  • Scripted videos for website
  • Began filming videos

Comic and Animation Creation Day Two

Students completed the following projects:
1. Drawing techniques
2. Computer Comics
3. Planned Comic Books

1. Drawing Techniques
  • Practiced drawing themselves using spoons for their reflection (PM class)

2. Computer Comics
  • Discussed characteristics of superheroes and looked at examples 
  • Created a superhero comic strip online and printed comics (AM class)
  • Created their own original comic strips online (PM class)

3. Planned Comics
  • Used a storyboard to plan out their comic books
  • Created comic book cover page
  • Began work on comic book

Web Design Day One

Students completed the following projects
1. Made a Tagxedo introducing self
2. Reviewed Websites
3. Started website

1. Tagxedo
  • Used the program Tagxedo which turns text into word clouds to introduce themselves
  • Selected the shape of word cloud that best represented them

2. Website  Review
  • Looked at examples of good and bad websites
  • Discussed what common elements good websites had, as well as a discussion of elements to avoid
3. Tagxedo
  • Selected background design for website
  • Set up website tabs
  • Picked pictures for banner
  • Wrote introduction on landing page (afternoon group only)

Comic and Animation Creation Day One

Students completed the following projects:
1. Drawing techniques
2. Early Animation styles
3. Practice Comic Strips

1. Drawing Techniques
  • Students looked at sample of cartoon drawings
  • Practiced drawing cartoon faces

2. Early Animation Styles
  • Learned about early methods of animating
  • AM group created their own flip books using post-it notes
  • PM group used pencils to spin their circular pictures to create a Phenakistoscope 

3. Practice Comic Strips
  • Looked at sample comic strips
  • Received pictures of comics where students created the dialogue to go with pictures
  • Created pictures based on the script they received

Engineering Challenges Day 5

Morning Session Ages 6-9
The students completed two follow up activities to their challenges yesterday.

1. Evaluated the toys that they constructed yesterday. 
2. Created a commercial to advertise their toy.

1. Toy Evaluation
  • Used a "Plus/Delta" format to discuss which aspects of their toy they liked, and which aspects they would like to change. 
  • Drafted a list of directions for toy use, discussed what kind of directions toy companies use on their toys. 
2. Toy Commercial
  • Created posters for their toys that displayed the name of their toy, toy company, and a diagram they drew of their toy. 
  • Scripted what they would say in their commercials.
  • Filmed their commercials.

Engineering Challenges Day Four

Morning Session Ages 6-9
The students completed two challenges this morning.

1. Constructing a parachute for Bob, a Lego mini-figure.
2. Designing and constructing their own toys.

1. Parachute for Bob
  • Used a napkin and string to make a parachute for Bob, our Lego mini-figure adventurer.
  • The parachute needed to be able to slow Bob's fall when he was thrown up in the air.
2. Constructing Their Own Toys
  • Made designs for a toy individually, discussed how toys are made with the audience in mind.
  • Divided into groups to collaborate and create new designs for a toy.
  • Constructed their toys out of recycled materials such as plastic bottles, plastic caps, fabric, and cardboard boxes.


Afternoon Session Ages 9-12
The students completed two challenges this afternoon

1. Lego Spinners
2. Construct a bridge

1.Lego Spinners
  • Students built spinners out of legos
  • Programmed spinners 
  • Adjusted spinners to see how long they could get them to spin for 
2. Construct a Bridge
  • Created a bridge using straws and tape
  • Placed penny rolls on bridge
  • Revised designs to hold more pennies

Engineering Challenges Day Three

Morning Session Ages 6-9
The students completed three different projects this morning.

1. Chair for Mr. Dog
2. Drumming Monkey
3. Henry Builds a Cabin

1. Chair for Mr. Dog
  • Used Legos to build a chair for stuffed animal
  • Chair needed to be sturdy and prevent the stuffed animal from falling backwards, forward, to the left or to the right
2. Drumming Monkey
  • Used Lego WeDo kits to construct a monkey
  • Programmed the Monkey to beat on drums
  • Students created sound patterns
3. Henry Builds a Cabin 
  • Used an online program to construct a house
Afternoon Session Ages 9-12
The students completed two different projects this afternoon

1. Amusement Park Ride
2. Paper Airplanes

1. Amusement Park Rides
  • Used Legos to design original amusement park rides
  • Added motors to their rides
  • Placed lego people in ride

2. Paper Airplanes
  • Experiment with different designs
  • Tested to see which would go the farthest and fastest
  • Discussed elements of the design and how they affected the results

Engineering Challenges

Morning Session Ages 6-9
The students completed three different projects this morning.

1. Tower Investigation
2. Wall Construction
3. Marshmallow Container Challenge

1. Tower Investigation
  • Explore towers built by civil engineers
  • Create towers using marshmallows and toothpicks (goal: build the highest tower that can stand on its own.)
  • Highest Towers: both 7.5 inches by Hunter and Chaya and the other by John and Mark.
2. Wall Construction
  • Build Lego walls in 15 minutes that fit specified parameters and pass a "flick test". 
  • Complete entry in "Engineer's Journal" 
3. Marshmallow Container Challenge
  • Construct box out of Legos in 20 minutes that will protect a bag filled with four large marshmallows (pictured below) from being squished by two blue textbooks (also pictured below). 

The children did not have any sort of model to go off of when building any of these designs.  Everything built came from their creativity and imagination, and each group completed each challenge with an amazing construction and an inspired design.

Afternoon Session Ages 9-12

The students completed two different projects this morning.

1. Wheel-less Car
2. Parachutes

1. Wheeless Car
  • Built a wheel-less car out of Legos
  • Figured out ways to make car move forward without wheels
2. Parachutes
  • Used variety of materials to create a parachute to get their Lego mini figure to the ground safely. 
  • Tested parachutes and made necessary revisions

2. Green Screen Preparation
3. Filming and Editing Movies

Movie Scripting
* Finished Scripting movies
* Worked with partners to create original movie scripts
* Shared film ideas with classmate who offered feedback

Green Screen Preparation
* Learned about the process of green screening
* Found images for their movie

Filming and Editing Movies
* Received an overview of iMovie
* Rehearsed scenes
* Filmed first few scenes of their movies
* Learned to upload and edit their scenes
